Basseterre, St. Kitts (Public Infrastructure News) – Following the installation of its planning committee for the commemoration of World Water Day 2026, the St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) is poised to host a month of activities to maximize the Department’s impact on the population.
The WSD’s observance of World Water Day, this year, will see the return of staple activities like the Minister’s address, health checks and a fitness walk.
As talks continue on the inclusion of new activities meant to highlight the importance of the WSD’s work, the committee hopes the activities will spark genuine interest and engagement from the general public on water security, innovation, and conservation.
In the past year, the WSD has been in the public eye because of its ambitious plan to address the water supply issues in Basseterre by constructing a desalination plant. The new plant, located at the C. A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site, is in its commissioning phase with many residents already seeing an end to the mandatory nightly water service interruptions.
Additionally, the WSD is advancing its plan to find new groundwater sources in rural areas. On January 30, 2026, drilling of a new site in Saddlers began, with residents anticipating an end to routine water service interruptions.
With World Water Day 2026 just one month away, committee members believe that the Department has a unique opportunity to use the attention it has already been given to promote additional dialogue with private citizens on conservation, innovation and sustainability in the water sector.
